Adam’s Direct Descendants and Their Life Spans

Unlike coexistent Homo sapiens, Adam’s direct descendants had major, inclusive souls.6 All souls require rectification; the larger the soul the larger the rectification required and the longer the process takes. Thus, Adam’s direct descendants needed more time and thus a longer lifespan to mend their major souls.

What happened post-Noah to shorten the lifetimes of Adam’s hereditary descendants?

Originally, God assigned great tasks to the antediluvian [prior to the Flood] generations and at the same time equipped them with commensurately greater souls…. He granted each human a certain number of days…approximately 300,000 [820 years]…. After the failure which resulted in the deluge, all of this was restricted in order to help us achieve what is expected of us in a lifespan averaging 70 years.7

Their souls were diminished and fragmented into minor souls in order to make the work of tikkun easier for each person. Thus, these smaller souls required less work, and as a consequence, those incarnated with them had shorter lives. From a few generations post-Flood there is thus no difference in souls; all are about the same size requiring about the same lifespan for rectification—the lifetimes we experience. We will return to the Genesis Flood in much more detail in a later chapter.
